シャム双生児、分離手術成功か？―シンガポール(ブログ内)の続報
シンガポール―10時間にも及んだ手術を無事終えたAnjeliちゃんとAnggiちゃんは笑顔で日曜の朝を迎えた。2人とも今のところは順調に回復しており、意識もはっきりしているとのこと。
｢順調です。2人とも今朝目を覚まして、私達や両親に笑顔を見せてくれました。2人のうち一方は既に人工呼吸機も外され、自力で呼吸をしています。もう一人も今日中に外せるでしょう。｣とTan Kai Chah医師はとても嬉しそうに語った。
一段楽したものの、術後の合併症などの可能性もあり、担当チームはまだまだ気が抜けないとしている。また、うち一人は依然として心臓に障害が残っている。
手術には共有されていた臓器をどう2人に分配するかという困難な問題があった。臓器の分配については手術がその場面に来るまで全くの不明瞭であったそうだ。
分離後も2人が正常な消化が行なえるように共有している腸を分配しなければならなかった。そこで医師達は、腸の各部位をそれぞれ2人に宛がうことにしたのだという。
また、共有していた3本の脚のうち、当初指摘されていた障害がある脚1本は予定どおり破棄され、2人にはそれぞれ1本ずつの脚が宛がわれた。
援助を申し出た富豪がこの手術に450,000シンガポールドル(270,000ドル：約2,900万円)を出資する一方で、医師団の中には無償でこの手術に参加した医師もいたそうだ。
